Why would an indoor coal furnace be emitting smoke and a sulfur smell?
my father has an indoor coal furnace that he's been using for years and more recently there's been smoke coming out of it and our basement where it's located smells like sulfur. i've read a couple of random internet threads that mentioned the smell possibly coming from the coal being wet, but no answer on the smoke yet and i'm not even positive that the wet coal has to do with the smell considering we store the coal inside. please help, any internet links would be appreciated as well i just don't want me, or my family, to die in our sleep

Buying coal for a coal furnace?
My mother has a coal furnace in her basement that was used for several years to burn wood and heat her house. Since my father died, she installed a central gas heating system. However, last year, there was a major ice storm and without electric, the gas central heating wouldn't work. Fortunately, enough wood was available to heat her home during this power outage. My uncle, who recently died, said it was possible to buy coal in the U.S. for home use. I've looked on the internet and haven't found any suppliers. I don't believe that coal can be bought in the United States for home heating. If I'm wrong, point me to a site or company that could supply my mother with coal encase of another storm like this and they are without power for ten days. Last year, I was there during Christmas when the storm hit. We were without power for ten days.Well, she lives in Mo. and I live in Ga. My sister lives near but getting someone to cut and stack wood is like trying to get someone to haul hay. This would be only something that she would need to use if the power were out. I'm not in a position to cut and stack wood for her and have been trying to find viable options. I have no experience with coal fires but as it is a coal furnace, thought coal would be easier to load in it and deliver to her basement than wood.

Pellet stove, outdoor wood/coal furnace or some other alternate heat source?
Looking for opinions. We NEED to come up with an alternate heating source for our home in the next few years. I spent $475 on heating oil and it lasted 18 days during the coldest part of the year so far, and we have an average sized ranch home. With oil prices expected to continue to rise, we need something to supplement our heat. Please tell me what heat source you recommend and list the pros and cons of different heat sources. Maybe throw in how much these things cost, installed and how much savings I can expect if I'm paying $3000 for heating oil per year.

Can i use sulfer to clean the creasote from my coal furnace flue? and how much /how often?
someone told me that sulfer was used back in the day to keep your chimney clean during useof the coal furnace. ive lived in this old house for 25 years. i have burned coal and wood since. although i did replace the old furnace with a new one in 99.its a clayton. ive always cleaned the chimney flue several times during before use. but the soot creasote seems to build up faster than good weather does. it my only sorce of heat, dont want another .i found some yellow powder whitch i beleave is sulfer in the floor joists a long time ago but never did anything with it. another website i was on said the main ingredent in those creasote removers was salt.i dont want to substitute cleanings but to prolong the intervals during cold spells in jan. and feb... besides preventing a chimney fire, aclean chimney helps keep the smoke and dust down in the house. i havent tryed any products that claim to remove creasote cause they dont say anything about coal .just fireplaces.
Charcoal/coal furnace cement help?
I went to home depot to get some refrectory cement for a charcoal coal forge im making, i bought fire bricks and this forge is an enclosed structure not a big dish pot kind of thing, they didn't have refractory cement but the guy that was helping us with the cement told me crack proof cement would also do the job great because of the fibers and stuff inside it and before i use it want to know if it will work? I dont want to ruin all the bricks and waste cement if it wont work, please help me thank you I need somewhere in phoenix to buy this cement...?
Dose those creosote remover products for coal furnaces work?
i have a coal wood burning stove. its a good semi air tight clayton furnace. its 7 years old. i do keep the chimney clean,as weather permits in the winter. i dont want to waste money on stuff that dont work. i need to know if these logs granuals work. or info on another product that might be good to reduce the number of cleanings. ive heard that potato peelings are suppose to help and what about aluminum cans? most of my problem is soot build up from the coal,i think. any suggestions?
