Older electric furnace question?
first of all, the old mercury bulb bi metal t stat isnt very accurate. you have to bump the set temp way up to get it to come on, then it burns you out. would a new digi t stat be a good idea?next thing is, how do i check the heat strips without opening up the unit. could i use a clamp on amp meter? i just wonder if all three 5 KW heat strips are working.what else can i do to tune up my old electric furnace? thanks jim
What does it cost to have a new high efficiency electric furnace installed?
its out in the country ,just electricity and the place is 1500 sq ft on main floor and 1500 sq ft basement its about 70 yrs old and a musty smell downstairs ,the cement floor looked dark and I asked if there was water and seepage she said no ,the walls are Tyndale stone and brick or cement ,there is a wood pellet stove in the basement for the winter ,but she said it cost $8.00 per bag and it goes through a little over a bag a day ,I don't know if she was calculating that into the $191 per month she says she pays ,have to check on that

Big problem with my electric furnace, nobody knows what is going on, need desperate advice?
My home is 800 square feet. Hubby and I work at home. Last year got $360 electric bill when we turned on the furnace. Normally, bill is $60 dollars. All neighbors spend about $180 with their electric furnace kept at high 80 degrees and bigger homes. We keep it barely at 65 70 degrees. Had two heater specialists inspect the furnace and both said it worked fine. None went into the crawl space but they both asked $75 dollars and said we should insulate the home better. Had an electrical audit done and was recommended to insulate attic and this would reduce the bills considerably. We insulated doors, windows, attic door, etc and spent over $100. We spent $925 dollars to make the attic R55. We also bought an infrared space heater $300 to keep on so we could keep the furnace at a lower setting Now, we are keeping track of our usage and just yesterday noted we are spending $13 a day for heat with the infrared heater and furnace on at 65 That is $390 a month I can't afford this anymore, I rather freeze than spend all that money. What is going on?No, neighbors are seniors that spend all day at home, they all say something is wrong with our heating, but nobody knows what. We are starting to keep the heat off at night and keep only a heating blanket on.

My electric furnace wont shut off?
I had a guy come in that know a bit about cleaning airfilters in the furnace. When i switch my heat to off, the blower stays on and wont shut off, we waited a few hours and its stil on. The temp on the thermostat goes up because it never shuts off unless i turn the breaker off to furnace. The thermostat is the second new one we tried installing so dont think its that. So we cleaned all filters around the furnace because we thought it was blocking the air from going through but after the second day we did that..the problem came back and the blower wont turn off. I dont remember if the blower should shut off as soon as i hit the off switch either or if it waits a few mins. Is there a off sensor on the blower somewhere or anything electrical inside that could hav gone bad?? THanks for the help I've been in this house for 5 months now and just last month it started doing this. With the old thermostat it originally had, it started doing the same problem, so thats when i used a new thermostat and still same thing. I dont think its a wiring problem on the thermo i have double checkedI've been in this house for 5 months now and just last month it started doing this. Your savings from switching from electric furnace to heat pump?
I'd like to hear from those who switched from an electric furnace to a heat pump. How much did you save on your electric bill after switching, how big your house is and what state you live in. I live in a mild climate oregon coast in a 1900 sq ft home and have an electric furnace. My power bill goes from about $85 in summer to $120 150 in winter. Current kwh costs are $ .06310. Trying to figure what it might save me a year in $.Some good answers so far.As mentioned I currently have an electric forced air furnace. The heat pump would be added to that and the furnace would remain as back up. No natural gas option here. The heat pump would work on 1 4 the power that the furnace does.I realize other things will still take power but the furnace takes a high percentage of my power usage according to my local power company about 50 %.I also get that the pump works best over a certain temperature and that fits right in with our climate.I also get that many folks aren't thrilled with the kind of heat it produces. I have a pellet stove but pellets prices keep soaring. Would it be possible that if the heat pump runs on a quarter the power that my furnace does it will reduce the percent of my bill that is heat related by 75 %?? The power company gives a more conservative estimate of 30 40 % in general information. not having inspected anything just on the phone. I did speak to one of the installers recommended by the power company after hearing the above he said a savings of 70 % to the heating portion of my bill.
Why is my electric furnace hot to the touch, even when it's off?
We had our furnace on only for a few minutes this morning to heat up the house, but then we turned down the thermostat to 58 and it hasn't come on the whole day. But now in the late evening, the face of it is hot to the touch. We live in a manufactured home with ducts under the house.

Why did my electric bill go WAY up since switching to an electric Furnace after using Space heaters?
Our electric bill went from the two hundred range to five hundred after switching to an Electric Furnace. I was told it would either go down or stay about the same as using the space heater. After my sisters house burned down and our outlets melted we freaked and invested in an electric furnace. Now our Electric bill has sky rocketed and we don't know what the problem is.. Is it the wiring. I know our house is not air tight but i can not believe just how much it has gone up. I simply do not understand HELP
