My gas furnace short cycles...it's fixed, but is there a back up to ignite the gas if the main isn't working?
This is Troy, not Jessica...I stole her account for this question. I just worked on my gas heater and it is working, but the problem resolution wasn't what I expected and left me with a question. Is there a back up gas ignitor? The furnace is for 1500 sq. ft. house and has three jets with 1 2 lb PSI. The rest is just the background story that goes into more detail, and will probably entertain the professionals out there. I thought the problem was build up on the flame sensor since I watched a rod at the top burner turn red, the gas sprayed, ignited and stayed lit for about 2 seconds, and then stopped. After a little web searching I found a video explaining how to clean your flame sensor thermal coupler and it all made sense. I have an old computer electronics technology degree basically just a pretty piece of paper on the wall and I figured there was a build up on the sensor and it wasn't able to heat up quickly enough and removing the build up would fix the problem. I dismantled some of the gas jet mounting so I could get to the screw to remove what I thought was the flame sensor at the bottom gas jet , got some emory cloth and cleaned the sensor problem one, I thought the rod was supposed to be round, not rectangular, but I didn't climb down out of the attic to double check since one rod turned red and the other remained black logical, right? I put everything back together and turned the power and gas back on, and crossed my fingers. To my surprise, the device I had just cleaned at the bottom jet and reconnected started to glow bright red, and the other rod was now remaining black. I shut the power off and sat there thinking for a moment. Obviously the bottom is supposed to be the ignitor, so I turned the power back on and let it run and the ignitor bottom started glowing again for several seconds, the gas started spraying and ignited into flame instantly and the gas kept spraying as it should past the two seconds and continued to burn as I put everything back together. With hindsight, it seems the problem wasn't the flame sensor, but the dongle connection for the ignitor wasn't plugged in well enough to maintain a proper connection. Now that all of this is said and done, I'm wondering why the rod at the top burner was glowing red and igniting the gas originally when the ignitor at the bottom wasn't connected. Strange smell from gas furnace?
Wondering if the exchanger is going bad? Getting a somewhat of a burnt gas smell from the gas furnace. I can only smell it for a couple seconds when the blower first comes on and then its gone and I cant smell it until the next time the blower starts back up. Its old and probably cost more to repair than to replace. I havent looked at it yet buy thought maybe someone on here would have an idea or knowledge of furnaces. Im thinking the exchanger is going bad or possibly not enough vent. Any info is appreciated.Does it sound like the fumes are kind of pooling in the vents somehow? Its only noticable when the blower first kicks on in its cycle. The more I think about it the easier it is to just admit the old furnace is about to give up the ghost. Thanks for the response guys, I really do appreciate your input and advice.
Is it normal for a gas furnace to click multiple times before it kicks on?
We just bought a house and had 7 year old furnace cleaned and serviced before we moved. Now that we're in the house, I'm noticing for the first time that our furnace clicks 3 6 times before it starts running. Is this normal? My condo furnace only clicked once before it started. Most information I found online addressed furnaces that clicked without turning on or that turned on only briefly. My furnace is otherwise operating properly.
My Rheem home gas furnace, gas valve "chatters" off and on, is very noisey and wakes me up?
I replaced the thermostat, but it still " chatters" off and on.

Our Coleman gas furnace is not holding temperature randomly - Help!?
We thought that it might have been the thermostat, but we switched it out and it is doing the same thing. It randomly decides not to hold temperature. If you turn it on and off a few times, it finally works. The igniter seems to be working properly, but it appears that maybe the gas valve may not be opening for it to catch and the igniter shuts off. Not sure what the deal is. Any ideas other than a hammer? Seems like with each passing day, the problem is getting worse. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Oh, it does NOT have a thermal couple.Jack Husband asked if you test it while it is on? How would you test it? Thanks
Heil Gas Furnace problems?
My Heil gas furnace is under the house. Whenever there is too much rain, the crawl space gets damp and the furnace won't start. I can hear it try to turn on, but I don't hear the flame unit ignite and the blower doesn't turn on. After a couple of days, when the crawl space is dry again, the furnace works just fine.People have suggested the control board as the problem. I'm wondering if there is any chance that something may have rusted out on it or a sensor is dirty. So before crawling under the house and trying to open this thing up to see what's what, I'd was hoping for some input on what to look for as a cause to the problem and what solutions you'd suggest.Thank you.
