1994 rheem oil furnace reset button keeps tripping?

Question: 1994 rheem oil furnace reset button keeps tripping?

(Posted by: Najio on 2010-01-06 03:50:59)

I had the nozzle and eye replaced last night and it worked fine, no heat this morning. Went and pressed the reset button, the blower came on, then the reset button popped back out...any ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean as the blower. If it's the fan you're referring to and it's coming on after pushing the reset button the it shouldn't, the fan should not come on until after the burner has fired and there is enough heat detected in the heat exchanger so the fan can start up and circulate the heat into the home. So if the fan is coming on right away then there is a problem somewhere in the electronic controls, relays, etc. and that's probably causing it all to shut down as it's designed to do. If the blower you refer to is the burner (it does have a fuel pump and the pump does act as a blower of sorts for the fuel inside the combustion chamber) then it's not firing up. The photo eye is there to detect the fire from the burner and when there is no fire within the proper time frame it will shut down the furnace as it is designed to do. There are some possible reasons why it's not firing up now. 1. You're out of fuel oil ( I know that sounds like a silly answer but sometimes it's true) 2. If your fuel tank is outside there may be some water in the line, the fuel filter, and/ or the valve and it has frozen up stopping the flow of fuel. That is a common problem in freezing weather. 3. The fuel filter is dirty and clogged and needs replacing. 4. If you replaced the nozzle and not a dirty fuel filter then the new nozzle may be clogged now too. 5. There's water in the fuel line at the burner now. You will need to bleed the fuel line at the burner pump to remove the water. If you have the owners manual still it should show you how to do it. 6. The electrodes inside of the burner are not firing now. They could have went bad or they were not tightened well when the nozzle was replaced so they eventually moved and they are now out of proper alignment. 7. For some other reason there's no electricity reaching the electrodes which is usually caused by an electrical/ electronic component somewhere on the furnace malfunctioning. 8. Maybe the new eye is loose and is out of proper position now, or the lens is dirty. Sometimes dirt or something can get blown up on & over the lens but thats rare. That's all I know and I'm no expert on the subject.
